(www.gawkwire.com) – The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) has awarded Slingshot® Product Development Group a prestigious 2015 Bronze International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) for the company’s creation and development of the SmartSpaceTM system for Masterack®.
Headquartered in Lawrenceville, Ga., Slingshot’s entry was selected out of more than
1,700 submissions to receive one of just 83 Bronze awards issued in the 2015 competition. There were 20 categories for judging and the SmartSpace cargo management system received the Bronze award in the category of Commercial & Industrial Products.
“Masterack brought us the challenge of finding a way to maximize storage space in their commercial vehicles in an economical and reliable way,” says Jose Gamboa, director of industrial design at Slingshot Product Development Group. “Based on ethnographic data and firsthand experience of the problem, our team determined there was a need for a lightweight modular space utilization system that was also good-looking and easy-to-assemble.
“We created SmartSpace as a highly versatile and easily configurable storage system for cargo vans. It’s designed to work across a wide range of commercial vehicles including vans and pick-up truck equipment. Slingshot’s solution offers expanded configuration options while reducing system weight and cost. This provides Masterack with a product that helps set them apart from their competition.”
Slingshot designed the SmartSpace system to be made of structural foam, aluminum and steel, so that the weight and noise level could be reduced. The dependable Smartspace system holds as much weight as comparable steel systems, but is much more versatile. Once Slingshot developed the prototype for SmartSpace, Masterack had the system manufactured and has been successfully using the storage system.
“Every day at Slingshot we hear about a client’s needs and then work to develop creative solutions,” says Gamboa. “We deeply appreciate receiving the IDEA recognition for our team because it shines a spotlight on our problem solving capabilities.”
Collaborating on the SmartSpace project at Slingshot were Gamboa, Bradley Workman, Sam Harris, Shaw Strothers and Noah McNeely. The IDEA is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. For more details visit www.idsa.org/awards.
