(Gawkwire.com) IBM and generationE Technologies have announced a new software and services bundle to help small to mid-sized communications service providers (CSPs) prevent network downtime or loss of service to their customers. The bundle will help smaller CSPs more easily adopt the sophisticated network monitoring capabilities used by larger service providers.

Typically, small to mid-size CSPs have limited views of their network environment and do not have proactive monitoring capabilities such as the consolidation of repeated network alerts. This can cause ongoing false alerts, which are ignored by network technicians, but increase the chance of a missing a real network warning. One missed alert can result in loss of service to thousands of customers. The IBM software provides a comprehensive view of the network, consolidating and prioritizing networks alerts, which helps prevent network outages.

Like large CSPs, small to mid-size service providers need a reliable network in order to maintain and grow their customer base. Consolidated Communications, a mid-size CSP serving customers in Illinois, Texas and Pennsylvania, needed advanced monitoring capabilities for their IP-based network, which includes telephone, high-speed Internet access and digital TV services.

"After evaluating other company solutions, we chose IBM Tivoli Netcool software because it will provide us with the most comprehensive visibility and flexibility in managing our network," said Chris Smith, senior manager, Network Operations Center, Consolidated Communications. "The implementation services provided by generationE Technologies helped us to easily integrate the IBM software into our network environment."

"Small to mid-midsize communications service providers are one of the fastest growing sectors, and an increasing number have been switching to the more advanced network monitoring capabilities offered by IBM Tivoli Netcool software," said Scott Sobers, program director for the communications industry, Tivoli Software, IBM. "This new bundle offered with generationE Technologies will help small to mid-size CSPs become more competitive and profitable by recognizing short-term efficiencies, managing service quality, and launching new services faster to market."

Interrupted mobile and broadband service is not only costly and time consuming for CSPs to repair, but a key factor for customer churn. According to an IBM Institute for Business Value global telecommunications study published this week, 70 percent of mobile and broadband consumers stated "network reliability" as a top reason for choosing or leaving a service provider.

The bundle includes IBM Tivoli Netcool software, which proactively monitors mobile, fixed and broadband networks to help prevent network downtime or loss of service, with implementations services by generationE Technologies.

IBM Tivoli Netcool software has been selected by more than 1,000 CSPs globally. The software helps service providers manage service quality and reduce operational costs. IBM helps service providers address emerging opportunities in next-generation network transformation, fixed/mobile convergence, and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) deployment.

generationE Technologies offers the implementation services required to deploy the IBM Tivoli Netcool solutions included in the new bundle. Over the last decade, generationE has developed deep expertise around all aspects of Operations Support Systems (OSS) in the communications service provider industry and holds the largest number of IBM Tivoli AAA accreditations worldwide.
