OpenDNS Announces CarrierSecure
New OpenDNS program uniquely designed for carriers will make it easier than ever to deliver comprehensive, cloud-based security protection and improved customer experience.
(Gawkwire) - OpenDNS, the world's largest Internet-wide security network – making the Internet safer, faster and more reliable for more than 50 million people every day – today announced CarrierSecure, a new program designed to enable telecom providers to offer opt-in Web filtering, phishing, malware and botnet protection across wired and wireless networks.
OpenDNS is the leading provider of unique security services that use its DNS platform and intelligence to protect businesses and schools around the world from malware, botnets, phishing and other nefarious traffic, as well as filter Internet content to keep employees and students from accessing unsafe or undesirable content. As of current, tens of thousands of organizations and educational institutions, including Fortune 100 enterprises and one in every three U.S. public schools, rely on OpenDNS to make their Internet safer and better performing.
The development of CarrierSecure is a direct result of mounting demand for OpenDNS services among Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and telecom companies, including mobile carriers. Particularly for mobile carriers, OpenDNS is uniquely able to meet their customers’ critical and increasing mobile security needs without requiring the installation of complex on-device software. OpenDNS services are cloud-based, which means security settings are easily applied to mobile devices without the need for software. CarrierSecure is designed to complement the existing OpenDNS MSP Program, which has been a tremendous success around the world, and today includes more than 1,000 MSP partners who manage OpenDNS services for their clients.
To spearhead the development of CarrierSecure, OpenDNS is pleased to announce that Mark Kreitzman has joined the company as Head of Global Alliances. Kreitzman brings more than 15 years of experience building partnership and alliance programs at leading security companies.
Under CarrierSecure, carriers will be able to take advantage of an array of services and functionality, which together are not currently being offered by any other security provider.
Among the many services available to carriers under CarrierSecure are:
WiFi Web Filtering/Internet Security: Under CarrierSecure, OpenDNS empowers carriers to quickly and easily deploy content filtering across corporate customer sites and WiFi hotspots. Zero software or hardware is required.
Security for Higher Education Institutions and K-12 Schools: OpenDNS has tremendous momentum in education markets because its solutions are ideal for education environments. OpenDNS malware and botnet protection enables BYOD policies for higher education, and easy-to-manage Web filtering for K-12 schools can be deployed district- or state-wide in a single day. Significant discounts are available for EDU.
Managed Enterprise Security: OpenDNS malware and botnet protection services empower corporations to intelligently disarm and quarantine malware infections by cutting off C&C communication. Under CarrierSecure, telcos can deploy and manage OpenDNS security solutions across one or many customer sites, including employee-used devices.
3G/4G/LTE Filtering for WiFi, MiFi and Tablets: OpenDNS is uniquely able to secure mobile devices, including tablets, connecting to 3G, 4G and LTE networks, in addition to WiFi and MiFi. Under CarrierSecure, it’s easier than ever to deploy OpenDNS across mobile devices.
Fast, Reliable DNS Resolution: OpenDNS offers Premium DNS for carriers under CarrierSecure. Premium DNS is widely considered to be the best-performing recursive DNS service in the world. For carriers, using Premium DNS means DNS redundancy and a superior Internet experience with more uptime for customers.
Additionally, with CarrierSecure OpenDNS is offering a best-in-class, multi-tenant, cloud-hosted solution. CarrierSecure partners can manage and support all of their customers through a centralized Web dashboard while providing customers with access limited to their networks. This flexibility in delegating administration and the ease of use provided by the OpenDNS dashboard saves service providers time and money. OpenDNS will also be extending its API, allowing carriers to seamlessly integrate all OpenDNS controls and reporting into their own customer portal for a completely branded and localized experience.
“Partnerships are a tremendous growth area for OpenDNS and I’m excited for the potential of CarrierSecure,” said OpenDNS CEO David Ulevitch. “We created this program as a more formal way to establish large, global partnerships and help deliver OpenDNS’s many benefits broadly. From faster, more reliable DNS to customizable parental controls and Internet security, we’re confident CarrierSecure will bring OpenDNS to many more people.”
“OpenDNS is the perfect solution for seemingly every network and customer, and CarrierSecure is the best way to help deliver OpenDNS through telcos and carriers,” said Kreitzman. “Our initial foray into a partners initiative is our MSP Program, which has been a great success where demand continues to grow. We found each MSP has unique customer requirements, ranging from traditional enterprise wired network to WiFi on school buses. CarrierSecure simply wraps all the different services offered together into a formal program empowering carriers to easily provide OpenDNS.”

About the OpenDNS network:
OpenDNS operates datacenters situated strategically at the most well-connected intersections on the Internet. Today there are twelve datacenters, with representation at all major Internet exchanges, and more are being added regularly. Further, OpenDNS uses sophisticated Anycast routing technology, which means customers’ requests are automatically answered by the OpenDNS datacenter physically closest to them. The result is a faster, more reliable Internet experience regardless of physical location.
