The exhibit opens Friday March 16 and runs through September 30, 2012.
The free exhibit celebrates the 40‐year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, focusing on striking visual effects, the creative use of technologies, and highlighting the most influential artists and designers. A three-day “Game Fest” kicks off the event this weekend celebrating the opening with talks, discussions, costume photo-op, open game playing, music, and movies.
Bushnell, who founded Atari and often is considered the father of electronic gaming, will give a speech Friday at 7 p.m. to a sold out audience about how far video games have come and how it all started. The program will be live streamed in the museum’s Kogod Courtyard and webcast online.
Bachus, who co-created the Xbox, was invited to attend the opening festival because 10 percent of the 80 games in the display are from the Xbox family including: Halo 2 (Action), Panzer Dragoon Orta (Target), Fable (Adventure), Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell (Tactics) and, from the XBox 360, Bioshock (Action), Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (Target), Mass Effect 2 (Adventure), Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II (Tactics). Among the games and consoles available for open play will be the Xbox 360 – Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved.
