Spammers spread 1.55m Spam Emails From School

Otago, New Zealend (Gawkwire.com) Over a recent teo-and-a-half days, a reported 1.55 million spam emails were sent out by hackers who gained access to staff members accounts at New Zealand's University of Otago.

Reporters from the Otago Daily Times say that the spammers, impersonating officials from the university, tricked at least four staff memebers into giving them important login information. The information was then used to send out the spam emails.

An official from the University of Otago released a statement on Friday announcing, "The university is currently experiencing access and delivery issues with Stonebow webmail. A number of Stonebow accounts have been compromised by staff members responding to a phishing email. These accounts have been used to distribute spam. This has resulted in the university mail server being blacklisted by a number of providers."

The school however still has a lot of work ahead of them in the upcoming days, even though the compromised accounts have been deleted.
