Gawkwire: Web Hosting and Internet News Resource: Through the Eyes of a Novice Through the Eyes of a Novice ================================================================================ David_Dunlap on 21 December, 2009 09:36:00 (WebHost Blog) If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch someone who has never even thought about HTML or coding create a web site, I highly recommend it. Especially if you are a programmer, web designer, web host, customer service, well any job or hobby that has to do with web sites. The amount you can learn and the frustrations you can see in a few days can make long lasting impressions. Little things we take for granted or have learned to work around get brought to the for. For me it happened when a friend of mine had to make a web site for school and asked for my help. I pointed her in the direction of FrontPage or Dreamweaver and told her just use the tools and you too can make a basic web site! Well as you can imagine it didn’t go as well as planned. In the end, I ended up teaching her HTML and CSS instead. Now there is of course a point to all of this. I notice a lot of software packages are calling themselves easy to use or intuitive or well you get the picture. I wonder how many of these ultra easy to use suites have actually taken people who have never used them and actually have them put it through their paces. And then still further. I want to know which companies actually took notes and implemented things. For instance, one thing I notice in myself as well as others is the desire to skip welcoming and tutorial screens and get right to it. How many companies spent months working on the tutorial screen only to have those it was directed at helping close it out and immediately get lost? I would imagine it is quite a few and that is most unfortunate. Therefore I ponder a question, how hard would it be to make software that conforms to us not us having to conform to the software?
